M2370
A quite exceptionally beautiful mahogany long case clock with moons.
The well made eight day movement has a Graham dead beat escapement. The exceptionally well painted dial has a white chapter ring with clear Arabic numerals, and a subsidiary seconds dial in the top of the painted centre.
The centre painting depicts a scene of Moses in the bull rushes with his mother, with the princess and her lady in waiting watching unobserved. The spandrels are painted with figures of nymphs representing the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter. The moon dial in the arch is delicately painted with a landscape and a seascape between the two moons.
The outstandingly beautiful case has a triple arched door in flame mahogany with a finial in the centre in Strawberry Hill gothic style, There are square fluted pillars at the corners of the case, which is inlaid with very fine parquetry banding above the door and below the pillars. The elegant hood has panels of painted flowers in subdues colours over the arched dial, and is surmounted by a broken arch swan neck pediment decorated with fine embossed brass paterae and three spire balls. The fluted pillars to the hood are supported on extended plinths, and these, the hood door and the pediment are inlaid with fine parquetry lines
It is clear that the un-named master craftsman responsible for this clock had set out to design the most beautiful case possible as his masterpiece, with no expense spared. This clock was purchased from a lady in Herefordshire who saidit had always been a treasured family possession. (The case is 7ft. 5 inches high)
